Is the AU CA Metal Card Worth the Wallet Space?

If you are a Chartered Accountant, you have likely heard about the AU CA Metal Credit Card. The pitch is usually about “exclusive rewards” and “premium privileges,” but let’s be honest: the main reason to get this card isn’t the reward points—it’s the flex.

It is rare to find a metal card that is Lifetime Free (LTF). Usually, that satisfying “clank” on the table costs a hefty annual fee. AU Bank is giving this to CAs for ₹0.

Here is a realistic look at why you should (and shouldn’t) get this card.

The Big Wins (Why you actually want it)

1. The “Flex” Factor Let’s not pretend this doesn’t matter. The card is metal. It looks premium, feels heavy, and signals professional status. Since it is exclusively for ICAI members, it acts as a subtle badge of honor. Getting a metal card without paying a hefty annual fee is a steal.

2. The ICAI Fee Discount This is a direct cash benefit. You get a flat 25% discount on your ICAI membership renewal fees.

  • Depending on your membership type, this saves you anywhere from ₹400 to ₹1,000 annually.
  • Since the card is free, this is effectively “free money” just for using the card once a year for your renewal.

3. Free Airport Lounge Access You get 2 domestic lounge visits per quarter. While many cards offer this, most “free” cards are devaluing or removing lounge access entirely. Having a Lifetime Free card that guarantees 8 visits a year is a solid backup to keep in your travel kit.

4. Low Forex Markup If you travel abroad or buy software in USD, the 1.99% forex markup is decent. It beats the standard 3.5% charged by most LTF cards, though it’s not as good as a zero-forex card (like Scapia or Niyo).

The “Meh” Parts (The Reality Check)

1. The Reward Rate is Average Don’t expect this to be your primary card for daily spending.

  • Base Spends: You earn roughly 0.5% back on retail spends. That is quite low. You can get 1% – 1.5% on standard cards like HSBC Live + or Regalia Gold of the world.
  • Software (The Capped Benefit): You get accelerated points (approx. 2% return) CA software.
    • The Verdict: 2% is okay for a free card, but there are super-premium cards that offer better returns.
  • Tax: On paper, AU offers 8x Reward Points on tax payments, which looks like a 2% return. In reality, it’s lower.
    • When you pay Income Tax or GST via a credit card, the government payment gateways charge a “Convenience Fee” (typically ~0.85% + GST).
      • Gross Reward: 2.00% (8 Reward Points)
      • Less Gateway Fee: ~1.00% (Fee + GST)
      • Net Profit: ~1.0%

The Bottom Line

Should you get it? Yes.

Why? Not because it’s the best rewards card on the market—it isn’t. You should get it because:

  1. It’s Exclusive
  2. It costs ₹0 (Lifetime Free).
  3. 25% ICAI fee discount.

How to use it: Treat this as a “specialist” card. Keep it in your wallet for the lounge access, pull it out to flash the metal design at dinner, and use it to pay your ICAI fees. For your grocery shopping or fuel, stick to your other cards.
